Phone – Everything and nothing

In my IT Literacy class, I was required to go through one day without using my smartphone as an experiment. I thought it was a fairly fine task and that I did not rely on a smartphone that much, however the outcome is that the smartphone is everything that I need.

In the very first minute of the day, I woke up (without the alarm of course, because I had turned off my phone before I went to slept the night before) and my first reaction was reaching my arm to find my phone. I needed it to tell timeBecause I have had owned a phone for so long, I do not feel the need to have a watch, and when the phone was “gone”, I became unable to tell what time it was. I needed it as a watch.

After eating breakfast, I had to go out to an outlet shop. On the road, I wanted to take a photo of a very beautiful scene, but I realized that I couldn’t do that simple task the moment I reached into my pocket and my phone was not there. I needed it as a camera.

As I need to go back home at five o’clock, I needed to know at what time the train would arrive so I could go home on time. I usually traced the train timetable using the apps on my phone, without it that day I had to trace using the hard train timetable at the station. I needed my phone as an information provider.

In the outlet shop, I wanted to compare the prices as the shipping fees varied. At that time I realized that I had also been relying on my phone as a calculator as well. Doing all the mathematics by myself took a bunch of time.

Throughout the day, I was constantly worried that what if I missed a very important call, what if someone was trying to reach me. Not only that, I did not have any access to the SNS at all. I needed my phone as a mean of communication.

At the end of the day, I was so happy to reunite with my phone. Fortunately there was no serious consequence. Being aware of the fact that it is everything I need for a much more comfortable life, but it also is nothing, as of the fact that I still survived without it for a day long! In the end, I realized that I could enjoy the day more if I went without a smartphone.
